Mattie’s Perch “White Shiraz”
July 2, 2007 – 12:03 amIt’s been quite some time since anyone’s made a post, and even longer since there’s been a wine post. Maybe this will get things started again. (By the way, Jeff, we need a category for rose wines.)
I’ve recently been trying quite a few cheap wines (under $12). Long story short, I seem to like Austrailian Shirazes, among others. I was looking around and saw the Mattie’s Perch “White Shiraz” and decided to give it a try. I’ll warn you that my taste for wine isn’t very refined. I’m much better at describing beer than I am at describing wine. Unfortunately, it really doesn’t matter for this post.
Mattie’s Perch “White Shiraz” is Australia’s answer to the popularity of White Zinfandel. Unfortunately, the result is a wholly disappointing wine. There’s nothing bad about this wine other than that there is nothing particularly good about it. The label mentions “fresh strawberries and sweet vanilla flavors”. Neither is particularly distinct. The mouth feel is moist and refreshing. But then, so is a cool glass of water.
So, while this wine may be cheap, there is no other particular reason to buy this wine. You’re better off looking somewhere else instead.
Hopefully I’ll be able to review some good wines in the near future.

I have been buying wine for quite a while and think that I qualify as one who can give an opinion. I discovered Alice White wines a few years ago and loved it. It was reasonably priced and referred my friends and relatives to this wine. As soon as I turned everyone in my county on to it, the price doubled. One day while looking for an Alice White (because I like Austsralian wines) I ran across Matties Perch. Very cheaply priced. Normally I would have passed this by but something told me to try it. I purchased the chardonnay and loved it. Every week I go back to the store and accumulate more and more bottles of this wine for my collection. Tonight I opened the cabernet. Now granted it is not the best cab I have every drank, but it certainly tops some I have paid alot more for than this. I called my brother and advised him to start stacking up on this wine because I feel like the price will go up soon because I am telling everyone about it. I have not tried the white shiraz but I am looking forward to it. Oh by the the way my ex-husband owns a winery so believe me this is much better than his.
