Trader Joe’s Wittekerke
April 2, 2006 – 12:20 amThis is an “authentic Belgian wheat beer” that’s priced like Sam Adams and in a PBR-esque can. The can is an oddball 11.2 oz (33 cl), slightly less volume than most beer. It’s not unusual to get Belgians in smaller volumes since they typically have more alcohol, but this one is at a watery-for-Belgian 5%. It’s noticeable mainly because it’s not quite as yeasty (as I assume it takes more or different yeast to get the higher alcohol percent?) as other Belgians. It was most comparable to the more common Blue Moon, which is tasty albeit a little sweet for frequent consumption. The main difference is that Blue Moon is a bit smoother.
It doesn’t quite stack up if you’re in the mood for an excellent Belgian. But if you’re looking for a refreshing lightly citrus wheat beer that you can either enjoy with the ladies or on a hot day, this will do it. And it’s a good price too, I think it was under $5 for the six pack. I hope TJ’s keeps this one around.

I didn’t compare to Stella, another low-class Belgian. I think this might be slightly better, but mostly it’s just different. The Stella is more like a pilsner, a little hoppier and lighter. In short, Stella is nothing like a Belgian, but the Wittekerke is, vaguely. Maybe I’m too hard on old Stella, it’s great on tap, but not so good bottled.

Either with the ladies or on a hot day. But not both? Is it an explosive combination to try both together?

I quite enjoyed this brew… however, I will give Hoegaarden and Leffe a better rating than Wittekerke. Near me, AJ’s carries Hoegaarden and Wittegerke. Sometimes, Leffe will be in stock as well.

I tried Wittekerke at a local wine bar last weekend and love it! It might be my new favorite beer.
