Rogue Santa’s Private Reserve
March 10, 2006 – 12:19 amAlso had last night at Lucky Baldwin’s were 22oz bottles of Rogue Santa’s Private Reserve, which is (as you might guess) Rogue’s winter offering. Unfortunately, I’m not quite as much of an aficionado as Jeff, so my beer-describing vocabulary isn’t what it should be. Greg, who also had this one, might want to fill in some of the blanks in my description. The beer was definitely good, but I didn’t find it to be outstanding. It was slightly bitter in an unpleasant way, but other than that there was nothing particularly bad about it. For Rogue’s description of the beer, you can go here. It’s certainly something that I would get again, but not something that I would go out of my way to find.
Other Rogue beers that might be of interest and that will hopefully get their own posts later are: Rogue Shakespeare Stout, Rogue Dead Guy Ale (currently my second favorite beer), and Rogue HazelNut Brown Nectar. In all, Rogue has 25+ different brews, all of which I’d like to try eventually, although I might have to go to Oregon to do so. Also, while this has nothing to do with the taste of the beer, Rogue beers tend to have beautifully designed and distinctive labels. The 22oz Santa’s Private Reserve bottles were rather striking.
Finally, for those of you who expected my first post to be about Shiner Bock, I can only say “Be patient.” Since Shiner Bock is my absolute favorite beer, I want to make sure it’s a good post.

I always say, the hoppier the better. So I thought Santa was just right. I’d drink it any time. The only thing: I’d say it’s a little one-sided. So I like it for the hops, but it doesn’t move in to the “excellent” category.

And here is the beauty of having guest bloggers on this site. I’m just about the opposite of Greg in “the hoppier the better” sense. If I was the only one writing, I wouldn’t be able to give enthusiastic recommendations of pretty much any bitter beers. I might be able to tell the decent ones from the outright crappy ones, but I wouldn’t have personal recommendations.
And, Adam, I know what you mean about wanting to take time with your Shiner Bock post. The beer has done such wonderful things for you over the years, it’s only appropriate to pay it the proper respect. That’s also how I feel about my eventual Young’s Double Chocolate Stout post.

What if I post about Shiner Bock and Young’s Double Chocolate Stout before you two yokels? Quit sitting on your butt and post!
