Lost Coast Downtown Brown Ale
March 10, 2006 – 10:09 pmAriele and I met Roger and some other folks at The Atheneum this evening for beers. There was a birthday party being held in the basement, so we took a couple of pitchers upstairs, sat on the patio, and shot the bull for a while.
The beer we had was the Lost Coast Downtown Brown Ale. If you have had Newcastle Brown Ale, you have an idea of what to expect from this class of beer. I found the Downtown to be too heavily carbonated though, almost as much as a soda. The aroma was very weak, and the taste wasn’t much stronger.
The taste was the slightest bit sweet with maybe a bit of chocolate, but nothing that I would characterize as being a signature taste. Given my choice, I would rather have the Newcastle, but if I was in the mood for a brown ale and my only option was the Downtown, I wouldn’t hesistate to get it.

I had it once long ago, and I don’t remember much, just that I was wasn’t impressed enough to ever get it again.

Yeah, I had a similar experience with it. It falls in the “decent/drinkable” category, but it’s not something to go out of your way for.
