Bavik Pilsner

Last night, a small group of us went to Lucky Baldwin’s for beers, and I must say I had a couple of good ones. The first pint I had was Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, which is my favorite beer. I will likely write something up about that one in the future. The second beer I had was the Bavik Pilsner, and I believe that was the second time I had tried it.

Pilsners are at the same time very interesting and almost totally uninteresting. They are very interesting in the sense that they go with almost any meal. There is no strong taste associated with them, so they won’t substantially alter the taste of anything you’re eating. It also won’t screw up your palate for drinks that you want to enjoy after the pilsner. That is pretty much the same reason why they’re uninteresting. If you find that pilsners taste bad, then you probably don’t like beer in general. They’re about as inoffensive as a beer gets.

The Bavik was just like many of the other pilsners I have had. It has a very light golden color with almost complete transparency. The aroma is slightly stronger than the taste, but neither is all that noticeable. If you liked pilsners before, you’re like the Bavik.

  2. I had the Rogue Santa’s Private Reserve Ale, and was impressed. Rogue is an all-around awesome brewery with a solid line-up: Shakespeare Stout, Dead Guy Ale, and Hazelnut Brown. All are delicious. Santa was more like Dead Guy Ale, but even hoppier and a little lighter if I recall.

Then I moved on to the Craftsman Rye beer. This was very strange. The color and consistency of a normal brown ale, but the aftertaste had a sort of metallic-grain mixture going on. The smell reminded Jeff and I of a Sour Ale we’d once had, but this beer had none of the sour or sweet that you’d think would go with that smell.

  4. I’m on board with Corona. It’s not terribly interesting, but with a lime it can be very refreshing, perfect for summer time.
